Follow Your Bliss
I'm sitting near the front of
room waiting to hear the words of Michael Beckwith, an
uncommon minister who founded the trans-denominational
church, Agape, in Los Angeles. Around me are people from all
races, religions, and economic levels and the room is
charged with energy and possibility, with love and
connection when Michael begins...
Follow your bliss.
A quote made famous by Joseph Campbell, but what does it
really mean? Should we bliss out sitting in the hot tub
drinking margaritas? Well maybe, that's up to you. But when
I look for my bliss, when I work with clients to help them
find their bliss, I operate from the belief that the bliss
Joseph Campbell referred to is much deeper than surface
pleasures like drooling over Godiva chocolate. Following
your bliss means devoting yourself to those endeavors that
make you come alive.
I'm very fortunate because since an early age I've found
different ways to do what makes me come alive, to do what
gives me energy, and I've committed myself to continuing to
develop my unique gift. You see I love to be an instigator,
a catalyst for positive transformation. It jazzes me to see
and feel the change and to experience the joy and
satisfaction when something or someone is
transformed!
In my 20s I was a hairstylist and I loved it when someone
came in feeling a little down and not looking their best and
when they left shining - on the inside and out. What's
better than that? Well, actually I found out because later I
found an even more deeply fulfilling and fun way to follow
my bliss. I began giving seminars and doing business and
personal coaching. It's wonderful to realize that it's just
another vehicle but the outcome, the excitement for me is
still the same - now I help people transform their
businesses, their lives, their relationships - it's just the
coolest thing ever!
What is your bliss? What makes you come alive? What gives
you joy, gratification, or inspiration? What is your unique
gift? How much of your life is spent involved in doing
whatever that is? The people who are the most successful and
fulfilled in life are often the people who have committed
themselves to developing and fully using their unique gifts.
But remember, following your bliss is not always easy.
Sometimes you have to face fears, deal with other people's
pessimism, or take risks. For many people finding and
commiting to going for it, whatever it is
takes courage, persistence, and faith.
I want to close this night's blog with a quote I saw
recently that made me want to jump up and say YES - that's
it!!!

Don't ask yourself what the world needs -
ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then
go do it. Because what the world needs is people
who have come alive. ~Harold Thurman
